Foreign Films

and the Library of Congress Subject Headings

This policy is meant to assist to patrons, library staff and catalogers in the use of subject headings for visual materials, primarily films. This policy does not supersede standard LC practices but is intended to show the interpretation of those standards by catalogers at TCC. The subject tracing is Motion pictures.

Motion pictures (may divide geographically)
Here are entered general works on motion pictures themselves, including motion pictures as an art form, copyrighting, distribution, editing, plots, production, etc. Works on the technical aspects of making motion pictures and their projection onto a screen are entered under Cinematography. Works on the technical aspects of making video recordings, i.e., creating and storing moving images in an electronic form and displaying them on an electronic display are entered under Video recording. Works on the artistic aspects of making video recordings are entered under Video recordings--Production and direction.

This subject tracing has many narrower headings. A complete list of the narrower topics is available in the Library of Congress Subject Headings. These narrower headings include:

  • If narrower subject headings are assigned, the broader heading is not assigned.
  • These subjects may be divided geographically. When the heading is subdivided by place, the subdivision refers to the locality where the films are available or viewed.
  • Typically, but not always, the language of the film will be that of the named country.

Example:
            Cyrano de Bergerac
                        Foreign films—France.
                        Feature films.
Note: The MARC record #041 |a fre indicates this film is in French. |b eng spa means there are English and Spanish subtitles available.

Im Juli = In July
            Foreign films—Germany.
            Feature films.
            Road films.
            Comedy films.

Call numbers:
Visual materials, including motion pictures, are generally classified with their topics. Motion pictures that are adaptations of literary works are classed with the author. Biographical films are classed with other biographies. Other films are classed in PN1995.9 under general genres (comedy, Christmas, death, family, horror films, love, etc.).
